The Walters Art Museum

Hashiguchi Goyo, the last of Japan’s great ukiyo-e printmakers, captured the spirit and the dynamic visual character of the pre-war era.
The tagline for the Walters Art Museum is "What Will You Discover?" and its website offers up a fine mélange of art pieces, along with information about their talks, lectures, and other events. Young people will enjoy the "Waltee's Quest" video game here, which gives them the opportunity to win a virtual gold coin. It's also fun to look over the Works of Art area, as it has a great range of categories to browse through, such as Ancient Americas, Ancient Egypt and Nubia, and Ancient Greece.

the warhol: Time Capsule 21

Andy Warhol was a man of many talents, though the world may know him best for his iconic Pop Art works such as his stylized soup cans and images of Marilyn Monroe. This particular web project from the Warhol museum in Pittsburgh affords interested parties a look into his Time Capsule 21. This compelling work is one of over 600 cardboard boxes that he filled over the course of his life. The material here dates from the 1950s to the early 1970s and is "a treasure trove of ephemera, source material and artwork." Visitors can explore over 50 objects from the capsule by clicking on "Selection of Time Capsule 21 Contents" and clicking and zooming in on items. They can also read texts and listen to audio and video selections. The contents here include photobooth photos and source material for Warhol's paintings, such as his early disaster image, "129 Die in Jet." Altogether it presents a fascinating look into the interests and habits of one of the best-known American artists of the 20th century.

A Painter Stripped Bare ‘Lucian Freud Drawings’ at Acquavella Galleries

According to many critics, Lucian Freud started making great paintings only after he let go of drawing: abandoning flat, crisply outlined figures for massively fleshy nudes nourished by a full brush. The quietly ravishing “Lucian Freud Drawings,” at Acquavella Galleries, gives Freud’s works on paper a chance to speak for themselves, beginning with his childhood sketches and ending with the last etching plate he touched.

Chip Kidd: Designing books is no laughing matter. OK, it is.

Chip Kidd doesn’t judge books by their cover, he creates covers that embody the book - and he does it with a wicked sense of humor. In one of the funniest talks from TED2012, he shows the art and deep thought of his cover designs.

MoMa Printout

There are several ways for online visitors to approach MoMA's massive exhibition on printmaking since the 1990s. Use Exhibition Views to virtually stroll through 31 shots of the galleries in which the over 200 works in the show are arranged - it can be difficult to read the labels, but a 40-page exhibition checklist that includes a thumbnail view of each piece is provided, so cross-referencing is easy. Choose Works in the Online Collection to do a search that retrieves works included in Print/Out from MoMA's online catalog. The resulting list can be sorted by artist's name, date, or title. Finally, the Selected Projects section showcases a number of projects related to the show, for example, Felix Gonzalez-Torres's project based on “Untitled” (1991), a black & white photograph of the artist’s empty bed, that was reproduced billboard size and shown at various locations around New York City between February 20 and March 18, 2012. Other projects are Rirkrit Tiravanija's rucksack installations, and Lucy McKenzie's editions of prints she call posters.
